Wellbeing and Inclusion
At Killara Primary School, we believe that students learn best when they feel happy, healthy and safe. The emotional, social and physical wellbeing of our students is pivotal not only to their success at school, but also to their development into capable and resilient young people.
We are committed to providing a safe, inclusive and stimulating learning environment where all students feel secure, respected and supported. When children experience a strong sense of belonging and connectedness with their peers, school and community, they are more likely to thrive and navigate life’s challenges with confidence.
Our school fosters a positive culture that values diversity and promotes inclusion at all levels of primary school life. We support the development of social literacy and emotional intelligence, helping students grow into well-balanced individuals prepared for success both in education and in life.
Our Student Engagement and Wellbeing Policy can be found in the Policy section of our website.
Social stories to support children through change
Many children feel most comfortable when their day follows a familiar pattern. Predictability helps them feel secure, focused, and ready to learn. However, it’s not always possible for routines to stay the same. Changes, big or small, are a natural part of life- including school life- and some children may find these transitions challenging.
Social stories are a gentle and effective tool used to prepare children for new or unfamiliar situations. Developed to support children who benefit from clear, concrete explanations, social stories use straightforward language and visuals to describe what is going to happen, why it is happening, and what the child can do. They aim to build understanding, reduce uncertainty, and boost the child’s confidence when facing change.
Transition focused social stories are particularly helpful when daily routines shift. They provide a simple narrative that sets out what to expect and offer reassurance by breaking changes into manageable, predictable steps. When shared regularly at a calm and unhurried time, they can reduce anxiety and help children feel more in control of upcoming events.
The end of the school year and the return to school after holidays are two transitions that many children anticipate but may still feel unsettled by. With this in mind, we have created two social stories that families can use to support their children as these changes approach.
Our Transition Social Stories
This social story helps children understand that the school year is finishing and that the holidays are beginning. It explains why school closes, what the break might look like, and reassures children that school will start again after the holiday period.
We recommend reading this story with your child at the end of term and into the beginning of the holidays. It can be revisited regularly—ideally when your child is calm and ready to listen.
This story prepares children for coming back to school after the holidays. It outlines what they might experience when returning, helps them visualise the routine of a new term, and offers reassurance to ease any worries.
Families may find it most helpful to begin reading this story towards the end of the holiday break. Sharing it regularly gives children time to process the information and feel confident about returning to school.
