 This Term

Integrated unit:

'How Things Work- simple machines.

We are having a 3 4 rotation activity day about the 6 simple machines on Tuesday 15/9/09 as a celebration of the unit.

Students are making simple machines and working on group projects at school.

CAMP

The year 3 / 4 camp was a wonderful success.  We stayed at Araluen in Anglesea. It was a 3 day, 2 night camp. Everyone, young and a little older, learned something new and we all arrived home exhausted but happy. We would especially like to thank our wonderful parent volunteers who were always so willing, happy, enthusiastic and supportive. Without parent support there would be no camping program.

Sandcastle building

After unloading our luggage we ate lunch on the beach and had a sandcastle building competition. The best part though, was jumping all over the sandcastles after judging.

Netting the estuary

Netting the estuary As we were working with Ecologic Environmental Education we were able to net the Estuary to discover the types of fish breeding there. The estuary is where the fresh and salt waters meet.  We didn’t really mean to fall in. Honest!

Octopus

octopusOctopuses have suckers all over their tentacles. Most octopuses are harmless but the blue ringed octopus, which lives in the rockpools around Anglesea can paralyze and kill.

Octopuses have a beak in the middle of their legs. If they can fit their beak through a hole they can squeeze their whole body through.

Edible root potatoes

edible root potatoes These were one of the most important food supplies for the local Aboriginals. The women would use sticks to dig out the roots for the small potatoes on them. They would then roast them on the fire.

We tried them, they tasted horrible and salty. We’d rather eat spinach!!

Rockpooling

rockpooling In the rockpools there were anemones, they looked like jelly pops.  We saw a sick sea star and we got to pick it up. There were a lot of sponges washed up everywhere. We saw plenty of sea snails and periwinkles in the rockpools.

On the cliff face we saw the shells of an Aboriginal midden which was over 15,000 years old.

Lookout below the lighthouse

lookout below the lighthouse From below we could look up and see the tiny people on the verandah of the lighthouse.

When you are in a boat and look at the lighthouse, if you see red, that means you are in danger of crashing onto the reef. If the light is white, you‘re safe

Split Point Lighthouse

split point lighthouse See those little black marks near the top… that’s us! The light house is 34 metres high and made of 800 cubic metres of concrete. It has a weather vane at the very top and is 66 metres above sea level.  At the base the walls are 2 metres thick and the base is solid and 4 metres deep. At the top the walls are 50 centimetres thick. Construction was by hand, began in 1890 and took about a year.

Ring tail possum

Ring tail possum Ring tail possums live in hollows in trees. They love to eat fruit and use their tails to stabilize themselves when they jump from branch to branch, and to grip the trees.

Students have their say

3 / 4 is really excellent fun and you're learning as well!

We have learnt so much about maths, literacy and ICT. This is the best year I've ever had.

I like it when people give me compliments and notice what I'm good at.

The promethean boards are so cool, really awesome, they make learning fun and easy.

The kids at Killara are the nicest people, it's easy to make friends, the playground is the best and the teachers explain things.

We love coming to school because we have lovely friends and nice teachers.

The students of 3/4LC wrote stories based on a photo of an elephant in a hotel lobby, and here are some of them:

An Elephant in a Hotel

On the first of November 1965, I was at a hotel for the first time in my life. It wasn’t very good because everyone was staring at me, except for the caveman on a painting. I brought my other trunk and got all my stuff out. I went to bed and the bed broke! I had no dinner either because they only had human food. In my dream there was a giant elephant-eating human! I nearly got eaten! When I was about to get eaten I woke up. Maybe seeing so many humans wasn’t so good after all. From then on I never went there again. Except for the time they were giving out free hay.

The Elephant Gets a Job

Hi, my name is Michaela and my Dad is the boss of his work and when he came back, he told me a funny story and this is how it goes. One day when I was minding my own business, an elephant said “Can I get a job here?” she said. “Um, I don’t know” I replied. “Please?” she begged “OK” “Thank you!” she said. She came back an hour later and did her job. The elephant was a grader operator and guess what she did?  She didn’t make the road all bumpy, but instead she made it really smooth. I named her Bingo and from this day on, she was working like a proper elephant {but taking lessons}. So, if you need someone to do roads, ask an elephant.

The Elephant and his Credit Card

An elephant needed a place to stay because his mother kicked him out of the house. She thought he was old enough to use his own credit card, and find a house [or a hotel in this case], to stay in and live. The elephant went to the finest hotel and broke down half of the hotel to check in. He handed over his credit card. Of course he had to pay with his credit card for the repairs, but it turns out that his credit card was actually a green leaf. From the elephants point of view it was a little blue card that held a lot of money, well in this case not so much money, in fact no money at all but really it was just a leaf. The elephant was kicked out of the hotel. He tried to find a taxi, and he did, but when he got into the taxi there was no taxi anymore, because he crushed it of course. And from that day on he lived in the streets waving his credit card, I mean green leaf, until his mother came. Oh boy she was not happy at all with him or his credit card.

Wonky Tusk The Elephant

I’m Brooke and yesterday I had my first day of work as a dance teacher. My job is in the city which is a 30 minute drive from my house. So I woke up at 7:30am so I could be there by 9:00am. The Dance Academy is next to a Fortune Teller’s shop. At the shop there are usually things like crystal balls, ancient statues, old paintings, glass beads and a big, antique lamp on the counter. Today my boss Mrs. Mandy announced that because it was my 21st birthday, they were going to hold a party for me at the fortune teller’s shop that afternoon.  When I arrived at the party everyone greeted me. The fortune teller named Lala Sabrina gave me an elephant. I wasn’t too keen on having an elephant living at my house, but I could tell Lala Sabrina wanted me to have her, so I took her. I named her Wonky Tusk because of the way she looked and she lived in my backyard. Later that night when it was dark Wonky Tusk must have hated my backyard because she was making really loud noises. She was waking the whole town up. I was getting complaints because people couldn’t get to sleep. It was so loud you needed ear-muffs, yet you could still hear her. Early the next day I decided to do something about Wonky Tusk. I took her to the zoo where she should be. The zoo keeper was happy to have Wonky Tusk! When I told Lala Sabrina she was a bit upset but she understood very well.
